DescriptionThis photograph captures the character of Michael Kane, an artist who has been a significant presence in Ireland’s cultural life since the 1960s. Conor Horgan grew up on the same street as Kane and went to school with his children. He wanted to photograph him for a long time. On 11 March 2024, having re-connected with the older artist at an exhibition of the latter’s work in Taylor Galleries earlier that month, he took this photograph in the artist’s studio. In creating the portrait, Horgan wished to reflect Kane’s own style of portraiture, which tends to favour a close-up viewpoint. The photographer used a FUJI GFX 50R medium format digital camera with a standard lens (63mm). It was lit using a combination of natural light and battery-powered lighting units and was printed in collaboration with Jim Butler of Inspirational Arts. It is number 1 of a limited edition of 3 plus two artist’s proofs.
