DescriptionPaul Barkshire, born in the UK in 1953, studied photography in Canada before returning to England in 1978. On his return, Barkshire’s interest was on recording historic buildings. ‘Watling Street, London’ can be situated within his wider ‘Historic London Buildings’ series. This photograph demonstrates how Barkshire often takes an unconventional view of the city. By taking a minor road as the focal point, he creates an interesting composition with Saint Paul’s Cathedral looming in the centre. This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
