DescriptionThe photographs of self-taught British photographer Roger Mayne (1929-2014) focus on inner-city London. Mayne absorbed the radicalism of post-WWII ‘humanitarian photography’ to create photographs with a distinctive artistic vision. For several years he focused on the young residents of Southam Street in Notting Dale, one of the more impoverished areas of London. Mayne recalled [source?]: “The reason for photographing poor streets is that I love them. Empty, the streets have their own kind of beauty, a kind of decaying splendour and always great atmosphere…I remember my excitement when I turned the corner into Southam Street, a street I have since returned to again and again.” (Artist’s website)This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
