DescriptionThroughout her artistic career, Bolay was strongly inspired by the landscape of the west of Ireland. She wrote in an exhibition note in 2006: “My themes often emerge from the Irish land and landscape, especially the rural western landscape.” In Woman at a Rough Point, the figure in the foreground who appears to be holding a sketchbook immersed in the wilds of the Irish west is uncannily similar in appearance to the artist herself and is likely an abstracted self-portrait.
