DescriptionIn this economical, immediate sketch, Miller records not just Hall’s activity, but also his frailty. It is not an academic study focussed on anatomical accuracy and certainty of drawing, but a record of ageing and artistic endeavour. It relates to Hall’s Working Drawing 22, one of Miller’s own favourites, which he said, ‘exemplifies [Hall’s] process with a particular lightness’. As the sketch records, Hall began the drawing by making black marks with a bamboo pen. For Miller, his sketch registers the moment – when ink hit paper – at which the potential of a creative act is realised.
