DescriptionIn 1924, Phyllis Dodd produced a portrait drawing, together with this etching, of her fellow art student and friend Kathleen Bridle (1921-25). Pindi was the sitter’s pet name. Dodd, Pindi and Norah McGuinness all shared student accommodation in London. Bridle, like McGuinness, attended the DMSA. She briefly worked as a glass painter in the Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios before moving to Enniskillen in 1926, where she taught at the Enniskillen Technical School. She remained in Enniskillen for the rest of her life and continued to paint. She greatly influenced the artist William Scott, exposing him to modern artists through books and painting outdoors with him.This is one of a group of six works on paper by the artist Phyllis Dodd, acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland in 2020, which came directly from the artist’s studio. This group of portrait drawings and etchings depict people whom the artist knew well, including fellow art students and friends Norah McGuinness and Kathleen Bridle, together with Geoffrey Phibbs, the English-born Irish poet who was married for a time to the artist Norah McGuinness. The artist’s fine drypoint self-portrait also forms part of this group.
