DescriptionThis sepia and graphite drawing is linked to a collection of nineteen small-scale sheets by Francis Danby, which were acquired by the Gallery in 2017 (NGI.2017.47.1 - 2017.47.19). This collection, comprising views of rivers, coastal and mountainous scenes, are all monochrome, drawn in graphite and ink with sepia toned washes. Some may represent English scenes, possibly around Bristol, while others appear to be Alpine scenes. Indeed, some could simply be imaginary visions of mountainous landscapes, as may be the case with this drawing. None of the nineteen sheets are annotated or dated. One of the larger sheets, a night scene depicting figures gathered around a fire in a landscape, has echoes of James Arthur O’Connor’s painting 'The Poachers'.
