DescriptionRoberts knew Patrick Tuohy well, having studied under him at the DMSA, and received letters from him when she was in Paris. She included a portrait of Tuohy, possibly this one, among the works she showed at the RHA Annual Exhibition in 1927, and the following year corresponded with him when he was visiting Paris from New York. This work, direct and rather matter-of-fact, is typical of Roberts’s portraiture. She is probably represented best by her brooding portrait of AE (Ulster Museum). Tuohy was born without fingers on his left hand, and clearly visible in the portrait is the glove that he wore as a consequence.
