DescriptionSydney Lee was born into a Lancashire mill-owning family. He studied at the Manchester School of Art where the Head of the Design School, Walter Crane, inspired his interest in Japanese design and printing techniques. Lee experimented with different printmaking tools and papers and tried, as he said himself, to imbue his prints "with poetry and feeling". This dramatic image pays homage to renowned Japanese printmaker Hokusai’s popular print ‘Great Wave of Kanagawa’ c.1830.Inscriptionlower left: THE WAVE [scratched out]
