DescriptionThis steel engraving depicts a British imperialist sculpture by Charles Birch. The statue, made in 1880, commemorates Walter Hamilton of Kilkenny, a British army officer who died defending the British Embassy in Kabul in 1879. In the 1890s the statue stood in the main hall of the National Museum of Ireland but following the foundation of the Irish State it was deaccessioned. It is now in the National Army Museum, London.Inscriptionlower centre: CABUL. 1879./LIEUT.W.R.P HAMILTON, V.C./ENGRAVED BY G.J. STODART FROM THE STATUE OF C.B. BIRCH, A.R.A.
