DescriptionIn the seventeenth century the Netherlands had strong economic and diplomatic links with the Ottoman Empire. With the development of trade in the Levant, Dutch travellers and artists were drawn to the area. The exotic landscape and people were recorded in prints which illustrated popular travelogues by artists like Cornelis de Bruijn, who spent almost three years (1671-81), in the city of Constantinople, now Istanbul.Inscriptionupper left (in plate): met Previlegie
