DescriptionThis carefully drawn architectural section shows the curved double stairs leading to the upper floor of the Dargan Wing and the doorway leading to the space that in 1881 became the new National Portrait Gallery. The fact that the drawing is titled: 'Extension of Sculpture Gallery' indicates that the drawing dates to before the opening of the Portrait Gallery. The drawing is unsigned and the creator is unknown. It is likely that the drawing was made by a draughtsman working for the Board of Works, the body responsible for public buildings like the National Gallery of Ireland. Francis Fowke who designed the original building died in 1865.
