DescriptionThis spontaneous sketch, typical of Osborne's small observational studies, depicts a man sketching from the life model. An inscription indicates that Osborne gave it to the art historian and critic Walter Armstrong (1850-1918) who became Director of the National Gallery of Ireland in 1892. The artist and Director were close friends and travelled to Spain together in 1895 – the man in the image is most probably Armstrong.
