Label TextCoypel was an artist and a playwright. He painted dramatic historical subjects in what was known as the ‘grand manner’. This painting depicts the New Testament story in which Christ cured a young man, thought to be possessed by demons. In the foreground, the convulsive man is held upright by his tearful father. Christ raises his hand in blessing, surrounded by apostles and onlookers. The painting’s large scale suggests that it may have been designed as part of a decorative scheme for a church.
