DescriptionWhile a student at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, Margaret Clarke made several trips to Inisheer, one of the Aran Islands in Connemara. She was continuing a long tradition, as artists had been inspired by the west of Ireland’s landscape and culture for generations. With a focused reverence, Clarke captured the tenacity of the thorn tree growing in a hostile, rocky landscape. The uniquely twisted thorn branch is closely observed, with notes in pencil recording the colours of the moss and the shadows.
