DescriptionThis watercolour charts the arrival of an evening storm and displays Turner's experimental, spontaneous approach. Numerous canal buildings, delineated with fine vertical strokes of red colour, a typical feature of the artist's late style, assume a flame-like appearance. Turner obscures all topographical detail, preferring instead to evoke dramatic atmospheric effects by merging broad washes of colour.
