DescriptionAccording to a legend which originated in France in the 11th century, Mary Magdalen travelled to Marseille and lived for many years as a hermit in the mountains near Sainte-Baume. In this image she is shown draped in animal skins to the right of the composition. When acquired by the Gallery at the sale of Dr Wellesley's collection at Sotheby's in 1866, this drawing was thought to be by Titian. It was previously owned by the British miniaturist Richard Cosway (1740-1821).ProvenanceRichard Cosway; Richard Houlditch; Revd Dr H. Wellesley; Sotheby's, London, 25 June 1866, Revd Dr H.
