ProvenancePurchased, van Diemen & Company, Berlin, November 1934Label TextThe married status of this unidentified woman is revealed by her headdress and the rings on her fingers. She wears a heart-shaped medallion depicting Christ on the cross, revealing her faith. Although the portrait is similar in style to the work of Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586), the monogram in the lower left corner belongs to a different, unknown artist. It is likely that this German artist knew Cranach’s work, or he may even have been a member of Cranach’s workshop at some point during his career.
