DescriptionSeveral versions of this painting of an Arab horse were made both by Géricault and his followers. The lone figure of the horse is striking against the dark background. Its pose and expression convey a pent up energy that seems to embody the very spirit of Romanticism. Géricault was an ardent horseman and equestrian subjects frequently featured in his art. He died in 1824, at the age of thirty-two, his health having suffered following multiple riding accidents.
