Label TextOliver Sheppard and AE were friends for many years before this bust was made. Both men studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and went on to become key figures in the Celtic Revival movement. The manner in which the portrait appears to emerge from the rugged marble conveys the Romantic nature of the sitter’s character. AE lowers his head, with a heavy brow, as if lost in thought.
