DescriptionWilliam Milbank (1768-1802), from Thorpe Perrow in North Yorkshire, is shown standing in front of the Temple of Vespasian on the Palatine Hill at the western end of the Forum in Rome. The ruins had yet to be excavated so only the upper portion of the columns was above ground at this time. Given the many pentimenti or visible changes (for example the outline of a black hat above the sitter's head), it may be a preparatory work.
