Label TextPanini was a renowned painter of views of Rome. In this painting, he portrayed the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre in the Roman world, completed in 80 AD. To the right is the Arch of Constantine, erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate Constantine I’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. Additional interest is provided in the foreground by the Borghese Gladiator (now located in the Louvre), as well as part of a sarcophagus with putti and swags, architectural fragments and gesturing figures.
