DescriptionOne of the key landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Aelbert Cuyp is known for his views of cows in the Dutch countryside. This painting dates to the artist’s mature period, when he frequently depicted the subject of milking. Cuyp repeated the present figure group of a girl milking a cow in several of his paintings, using a single preparatory sketch. Cuyp’s popularity was limited to his native town of Dordrecht during his lifetime, but grew considerably in eighteenth-century England.Exhibition HistoryCentenary Exhibition, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, October - December 1964
