Label TextIn style and character, this self-portrait demonstrates the influence of William Orpen, under whom Sleator studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Sleator had received his initial training at the Belfast School of Art, but moved to Dublin on scholarship in 1910. He continued his education in London and Paris and in due course established himself as a successful portraitist. He had such a close association with Orpen that he was employed to finish some of his former master’s work after Orpen’s death.
