Label TextThough Butts was not prolific, he was a very significant figure, taking on such students as James Barry, Thomas Roberts and Nathaniel Grogan. This painting is a preparatory sketch for a much larger and more highly finished landscape in Emo Court, Co. Laois. The dense composition may be attributable in some measure to Butts’s work as a scene painter for Spranger Barry’s theatres in Cork and Dublin. The tone is harmonious, and the detail clearly described, but the proportions are unconventional.
