DescriptionIn a humble farmhouse a father and two sons are having dinner. They are served by a woman, perhaps the mother of the family, who is pleased by their appetites. The young man to the right wears fancy attire and carries a money pouch. His bad behaviour – he spits out some wine directly at one of the dogs – reveals his true character. Ryckaert started his career as a landscape painter, but specialised in peasant scenes under the influence of David Teniers. One of the artist’s patrons was Archduke Leopold William, governor of the Spanish Netherlands.
