Label TextDusart was one of the last pupils of Adriaen van Ostade, arguably the most successful painter of peasant scenes in the northern Netherlands. Dusart remained one of his teacher’s closest followers and even took over the content of his studio after the latter’s death in 1685. Depicting a boisterous couple outside a house, Merry-making is based on a composition by Van Ostade. The boy, second from the right, plays a hurdy-gurdy, a musical instrument consisting of a sound box and a wheel that rubs against strings.
