DescriptionO’Conor’s experimental work was enhanced by his move to Brittany in 1891, where he became involved with the Pont-Aven School, led by Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard, which favoured a subjective response to nature. After Gauguin left for Tahiti in 1895, O’Conor withdrew for some three and a half years to the more isolated Breton village of Rochefort-en-Terre. O’Conor’s enduring interest in strong, expressive colour is evident in this bold watercolour. However, watercolours such as this, characterised by fluid brushwork and intense colours, are relatively rare in the artist’s oeuvre.
