Label TextThis is a rare depiction of a Dutch canal boat station, which would nonetheless have been a relatively common sighting in mid-seventeenth-century Holland. Horse-drawn barges (trekschuiten) were the most comfortable, safe and quick method of public transportation at the time. De Jongh was a highly sought-after painter of Rotterdam around the time he completed this work. He was also one of the most versatile Dutch artists, producing genre paintings, portraits, landscapes and biblical subjects.
