DescriptionThis series addresses the power of physical objects, in this case a stereotypical feminine accessory. Her artworks explore perceived images of femininity. Gregory states: “During a residency in Johannesburg I became fascinated by objects of luxury bought and treasured by those with positions of power and privilege during the period of apartheid. I was particularly attracted to handbags and gloves for their potency symbols of femininity. For me what is interesting and intriguing about these objects is their association with a particular society and moment in history.”Gregory utilises Victorian photographic printing processes in her practice, such as the cyanotype which involves placing physical objects onto paper painted with light sensitive emulsion. When exposed to light, these objects are fixed in a deep blue shrouded by a deep blue shadow.
This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
