DescriptionThe English photographer John Davies began photographing the urban landscapes of Britain in 1981, publishing his 'A Green & Pleasant Land' which examined the changing post-industrial landscape in 1986. In 2000, Davies began his ‘Metropoli Project’ which investigates Britain’s major post-industrial cities. Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, which forms part of that series, captures the Gardens during a redevelopment from 2001 to 2003. In his work, Davies interrogates our collective role and responsibility in shaping the environments in which we live.
This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
