DescriptionThis photograph is one of a group of 21 selected from a collection of almost 200 images of well-known cultural figures. It is part of a gift donated by the artist’s husband Michael Sachs in 2024. Nancy Lee Katz photographed the subjects in New York between the 1970s and the 1990s. She used a Hasselblad 6x6 camera with Kodak PXP film. Each of the sitters, who Katz generally did not know personally, was photographed in their home or studio. She often included ‘props’ that represent their field – a camera, painting, sculpture or a musical instrument. Her ‘pantheon’ of images gives a sense of the richness of cultural life in New York during the later twentieth century. The gelatin silver print photographs were printed posthumously between 2018 and 2023 from the original black-and-white negatives on Ilford Multigrade fiber-base Warmtone glossy Baryta-coated chloro-bromide based emulsion paper.
