DescriptionCecil King began the Baggot Street Series in 1967. The series is characterised by flat fields of colour and the repeated motif of a parallelogram from which a diagonal line runs. The line can be read like a beam of light cast through an open door. King’s style evolved with these paintings, where figurative elements and forms are simplified to geometric shapes. King said ‘The Baggot Street series was the break that opened up another world for me. I felt I’d found my identity so to speak.’ This particular example of the Baggot Street Series is among the most dramatic, with the principal colours being black and white. This painting was exhibited at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in 2008 as part of the retrospective exhibition ‘Cecil King: A Legacy of Painting’.
