DescriptionIntrusion is typical of Cecil King’s hard-edge painting, the style with which he is most associated. King applies paint evenly and flatly onto the canvas, building it up in layers using both brushes and foam. In this work, brown paint is applied squarely around the edge of the canvas, bordering a field of flat red colour beneath. A section of this border breaks away an angle – a motif repeated in much of King’s work. The composition of this painting is repeated in the Intrusion screen prints, using different contrasting colour combinations, printed by Editions Alecto, London in 1974. Editions Alecto was a print-publisher founded in Cambridge in 1960, which published work by British and international artists including David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, and George Segal.
