DescriptionLooking out to sea past Malin Head, mainland Ireland’s most northerly point, Clarke captures the wind and light of coastal Donegal. Silhouettes of birds fly above the peninsula as bright light breaks through the dense cloud cover, illuminating the water’s surface below. A cottage sits on the edge of the coastline, hardly visible at first glance, its presence dwarfed by the enormity of the rugged landscape. Clarke paints the Irish landscape, particularly rural and coastal scenes, in a realistic manner. Though a portrait painter primarily, the landscape of Clarke’s native Donegal is a repeated subject in his work.ProvenancePresented, Ulster Bank Ireland DAC, 2022
