DescriptionWhen Minihan was in Paris to photograph Samuel Beckett in 1985, he made a self-portrait by photographing his reflection in a shop window near Beckett’s hotel. He has returned to Paris numerous times since 1985 and makes a self-portrait on each occasion, documenting his growth as person and an artist. Self-portrait in Paris, 2016 is one of his finest self-portraits that highlights his interest in reflections and layers. In this work, Minihan’s image is reflected in two different mirrors, underlining the multiple facets of his character and the many perspectives each human being can be viewed from. The constant in each of his Paris self-portraits is the Rolleiflex camera, which is his preferred instrument for making figurative photographs.
