DescriptionSunset in Ireland is widely regarded as Haden’s pastoral masterpiece. Despite the fact that it is monochrome, through judicious use of light and shade and subtle hatching, Haden manages to evoke the waning light of a warm summer’s evening. The plate was drawn on the Tipperary estate of Viscount Hawarden and depicts the river Multeen. Towards the end of the summer of 1863 Haden ( who was Lady Hawarden’s doctor) was invited to the family’s country house at Dundrum. He was a regular visitor and even installed an etching press in the stables of the Palladian mansion. Haden reworked this plate many times and there are 14 known states, of which this is number nine.ProvenanceEx-collection Richard Gulkurst (1920s); Ex-collection of Beatrice Violet (nee Rawson) Lady Leconfield (1930s to 1952) ; Ex-collection of Michael Blaker RE (1970s to 2002) ; Purchased by Edward Twohig direct from Michael Blaker in 2002; Presented, Edward Twohig, in memory of his mother, Lilian (Nora Elizabeth) Twohig, 2021 Exhibition HistoryRoyal Academy, 1864
