DescriptionPhyllis Dodd was an accomplished portrait artist. Studying at the Liverpool School of Art from 1917–21, Dodd received a Royal Exhibition Scholarship and attended the Royal College of Art for four years – alongside Henry Moore (1898–1986), Raymond Coxon (1896–1997) and Edna Ginesi (1902–2000), with whom she would remain friends for the rest of her life – winning the Drawing Prize in her final year. The artist also made a portrait study in graphite for this drypoint.
This drypoint etching is one of a group of six works on paper by the artist Phyllis Dodd, acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland in 2020, which came directly from the artist’s studio. This group of portrait drawings and etchings depict people whom the artist knew well, including fellow art students and friends Norah McGuinness and Kathleen Bridle, together with Geoffrey Phibbs, the English-born Irish poet who was married for a time to the artist Norah McGuinness. The artist’s fine drypoint self-portrait also forms part of this group.
