DescriptionA leading member of The Hague School, Jozef Israëls helped shape the course of nineteenth century Dutch art. His powerful oil studies of peasant life were first shown at the Paris Exposition of 1878, and he was regarded a worthy successor to Rembrandt. In terms of subject matter his etchings, 30 of which are known, can be compared to the work of Millet, Van Gogh and Käthe Kollwitz.
