DescriptionIllustration to Goethe’s 1774 novel ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’. This stipple print shows Charlotte gesturing with alarm. Werther sits behind at a table, writing and glancing back over his shoulder towards her.
InscriptionThey had pafsed an hour in this irksome situation, when the arrival of Werters servant completed/Charlotte's distrefs. As soon as Albert had read the note; he turned coldy to his wife, and said give him/the Pistols. I wish him a good journey, these words were a thunder stroke to Charlotte.
