DescriptionJoseph Pennell was an etcher, lithographer, illustrator and author. He is one of the best known American artists from the etching revival period. In 1884 Pennell moved to London becoming part of the circle that included James Abbott McNeill Whistler and George Bernard Shaw. Later with his wife the writer Elizabeth Robins, he co-authored a biography of Whistler, who was a great influence. Pennell's etchings and lithographs are developments from Whistler's late manner, displaying a particular interest in urban and industrial subjects. Here he shows the foundations of the New York Telephone Company's new skyscraper being laid. The unlettered proof was issued by the artist in 1924.
