DescriptionThis lithograph was copied from a daguerreotype made by the inventor and photographer Professor Gluckman in 1844. Depicted here is the Protestant aristocrat William Smith O'Brien, a staunch nationalist who joined Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association in 1843. During the Famine he obstructed the business of parliament to demand food for the starving Irish. He was a leader of the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848 and was subsequently arrested and transported to Tasmania.
