DescriptionThis is an early state, what is known as an 'unlettered proof' or 'proof before letters'. As one of the first impressions printed when the plate was unworn, the print displays good detail and the black tones are rich and dark. The rocker, a chisel-like tool with a serrated edge, was worked over the whole plate to give a rough but even texture. The marks of the rocker are clearly visible at the bottom edge of the image. After this stage the plate would usually be cleaned and an inscription (title and publication details) would be added.InscriptionUnlettered Proof
