DescriptionThis sketchbook dates to the period that JBY was living in New York. It includes sketches of the Irish-American lawyer and collector, John Quinn, his supporter in old age, and close friends, the American artist John Sloan and his wife Dolly. A number of the sketches relate to the Petitpas boarding house on 317 West 29th Street, where JBY resided from 1909 to 1922. Celestine Petitpas, one of the Breton sisters who ran the premises, is also depicted. Pádraic Colum recounted how Yeats would bring his sketchbook to the dining room, sketching while engaging in discussions on art and literature with fellow lodgers and visitors.
