Label TextO’Conor painted many studies of young Breton women, often engaged in quiet activity or reverie. Like many of his fellow artist-visitors, he recorded the locals’ distinctive costume, but in his case as much for its pictorial qualities as for its distinctiveness or cultural significance. O’Conor’s associates in Brittany included Gauguin and Serusier, and his technique and use of colour became increasingly vibrant and expressive. He painted Bretonne during his last season in Brittany (1903-04), when he was working from a studio on the third floor of the celebrated Hôtel des Voyageurs.
