DescriptionDr Thomas Monro (1759-1833) was a physician and art collector. From the early 1790s he invited young artists like Girtin and Turner to copy from drawings in his collection. They were paid for their work and the set-up was often referred to as Dr Monro's 'Academy'. These 'Monro School' drawings illustrate Turner's keen interest in all aspects of shipping and sea-faring.
