Label TextChristopher was a large and strong man who served God by helping people cross a dangerous stretch of water. This panel depicts the moment that Christopher discovered that the child, who weighed so heavily upon his shoulders during the crossing, was in fact Christ. Lucas Cranach the Elder was one of the leading painters and printmakers of early sixteenth-century German. This panel was painted by an unknown member of his workshop. The shape of the panel suggests it was once part of a triptych.
