Label TextJohn van Nost belonged to a family of eminent sculptors. Around 1749, he left London for Dublin, where he enjoyed considerable success as a sculptor of monuments, portrait busts and medallions. The sculptor has chosen to present this unknown sitter in contemporary rather than classical dress. His costume includes a fashionable pigeon-winged toupee and brocade waistcoat.
