Label TextThis is a reduced copy of a larger antique statue excavated in 1736 at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli. The original was displayed at the Capitoline Museum in the 1740s, becoming one of the most admired antiquities in Rome. Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown, would have seen the original in 1751 while on his second Grand Tour. He probably acquired this replica from Cavaceppi's studio which was a regular stop for young connoisseurs. The original statue was carved from Rosso Antico, a red marble favoured by the Romans, but Cavaceppi used a more easily sourced white stone.
