Label TextThis Roman copy of a Greek sculpture is in the style of Praxiteles, the most famous Greek sculptor active in the fourth century bc. Greek art was popular with wealthy Romans, and sculptors made marble copies of Greek bronze sculptures to supply the demand. Over time, many of the bronze originals were melted down or lost, so these marble copies are important reminders of what has disappeared. However, while some sculptors made direct copies, others exercised artistic license to produce Greek style works.
